How to do Foundation Double Crochet

Posted by vicki brown on

As today is the day we start the Summer of Crochet Socks crochet-a-long and the first pattern (Cranage Socks) starts with a row of Foundation Double Crochet, I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a little tutorial for this stitch. I love this method of starting any crochet work - I much prefer it to starting chains - and it's particuarly useful for this pattern as we go around and work into the underside of the foundation row and I think it makes a nicer base of the stitch. If you really don't want to do this...

Check your Gauge

Last weekend I was away at The Crochet Sanctuary, where I taught my first ever workshop - socks! So that everyone would have time to work through all the techniques for the sock pattern, I added a sample sock size to the pattern, a little baby sock. I'm so pleased with this idea as not only did it mean there was time for everyone to get to grips with the pattern in the time restraints, it also worked really well as a gauge swatch and served as an excellent example as the importance of swatching. How I Became a Crochet Designer

It's been over 10 years since I had my first crochet pattern published. How I got into crochet design is a question I get asked a fair amount so I thought it would be good to write up a blog post explaining how I did! Yarn Studio Tour

Last spring the super talented Kasia Fiszer came to the studio to shoot some photos for me (I had full intentions of using them to refresh my website but I haven't go round to that yet!) so I figured it would be nice to do a little round up of them here. Full disclosure, it's not usually this tidy in here! I'm so so very lucky to have two rooms at Princes Street Studios. One is my main yarn room - kind of like a showroom I guess, where I store all my dyed yarns and ship out all my...

Teaching Kids to Knit

Posted by vicki brown on

It's taken a few attempts but I think I've finally taught Effie (7) to knit and not only that but got her interested and excited about it. So I wanted to share a little bit about how we got here, as it's not been quite as easy as I had imagined. Both my kids learned to knit pretty young as they spent so much time watching me knitting away, but there seemed to be a bit of a disconnect between learning the motions and actually persevering with a project. I think I forgot how long it actually takes to knit...
