Festival Watch Strap :: Free Crochet Pattern ::

Posted by vicki brown on

With the weather attempting to improve and summer definitely within reach, I've been thinking a lot about summer festivals and was reminded that last year I made this watch strap for Latitude Festival. I originally offered it as a free pattern especially for my newsletter subscribers, but I thought I'd share it over here on the blog now, so that if you wanted to make your own for this summer you could.

The pattern is written out in it's entirety below, but if you'd rather you can download the PDF here.

Please note it is written in UK crochet terms.

Designed especially to take with me to a music festival, this crochet strap brings any old or
cheap watch face to life, whilst the cotton strap makes it easy and light to wear.

YARN: small quantities of cotton 4ply yarn
I used; DMC, Petra 5 (100% cotton)

  • Yarn A - Orange (5722)
  • Yarn B - Golden Yellow (5742)
  • Yarn C - King Fisher Blue (53845)
  • Yarn D - Pink (53805)
Any similar 4ply cotton yarn would also work.

HOOK:
• 3mm hook

NOTIONS
• Tapestry Needle
• Watch Face
• Strap Buckle

TENSION: Exact tension is not essential for this project, though you should check on
completing your foundation chain that the strap will comfortably fit around your wrist.
20sts measure 10cm/4” in double crochet using 3.25mm hook.

PATTERN NOTES:
I used a cheap watch with a nasty plastic strap I found in a charity shop for my project,
because essentially I wanted something I wouldnʼt be heartbroken over if it got lost or
damaged. Feel free to use whatever watch face you like for yours.
For my buckle I recycled the one that came with the watch.
The pattern is written in 2 sizes the first is for a strap which will fit around the wrist once,
the second is for a strap that will wrap around your wrist twice (which is the size I made my
strap in).
The directions create a strap that measures .75cm in width, by adding rows on to yours
you can make the strap wider if needed to fit your watch face.

ABBREVIATIONS
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
st - stitch

PATTERN STARTS

STRAP 1
Row 1: Using Yarn A, 21(41)ch, 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end, turn
Row 2: Using Yarn B, 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn
Row 3: Using Yarn C, 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn
Fasten off.

STRAP 2
Row 1: Using Yarn D, 31(51)ch, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end, turn
Row 2: Using Yarn C, 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn
Row 3: Using Yarn B, 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
With Strap 1, take buckle and carefully thread strap through about 1cm, pierce buckle pin through centre of strap at the point and fold over. Using your tapestry needle and piece of cotton yarn, firmly sew strap in place.
With the other end of Strap 1, making sure your buckle end is the correct way up, thread about 1cm carefully through the strap bar on the top of your watch face.
You can also remove the strap bar to attach the strap, but I found this an easier method. Using your
tapestry needle and a piece of cotton yarn, firmly sew strap in place.
With Strap 2, thread about 1cm carefully through the strap bar on the bottom of your watch
face. Using your tapestry needle and a piece of cotton yarn, firmly sew strap in place.
