Ombre Blanket Pattern

mini skein crochet blanket Vicki Brown

I've been meaning to share this with you for ages (well since I started my ombre blanket back in January), but I've finally got around to writing up the pattern for the ombre blanket I'm making with the mini's from The Mini Skein Club (I'm using the DK weight yarn in the ombre set).

It's a super simple stitch, but I think it works really well for a blanket, it has just the right amount of interest for me, but it's also mindless enough for evening crochet alongside TV watching.

I've even hand painted a crochet stitch chart to accompany the pattern!

Yarn

I'm using 20g mini skeins in Double Knit weight for my blanket from The Mini Skein Club. For the size I'm planning this would use around 90 mini skeins, which will be 18 months of the club.

20g/45m 75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon

Hook

5mm/US size H/8

Abbreviations

Pattern uses UK crochet terms, US equivalents are given in brackets below.

Ch - Chain

Rep - Repeat

St(s) - Stitches

Tr - Treble Crochet (Double Crochet)

Gauge

16 sts and 9 rows in Treble Crochet (Double Crochet) measures 10cm x 10cm/4" x 4" using 5mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Size

Blanket measures approximately 135cm wide, I'm still working on mine but planning to make it about 200cm long, which will be approximately 180 rows.

Notes

You can adjust the size of your blanket easily, just work more or less stitches, making sure you work in multiples of 3 plus 2 (counting the starting chain as a stitch, therefore for your foundation row you would need your chains to be multiple of 3, plus 4. The 4 represents one chain which you will work 1 stitch into and 3chs for your starting ch which is your first st)

To calculate the number of stitches required to make your desired size, multiply the width you would like by 1.6 (assuming your gauge is correct), then adjust the number to fit within the rule above.

Starting chain counts as 1tr throughout, turn at the end of each row.

Pattern Starts

Foundation Row: Using Yarn A, 211ch, 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end, turn. 209sts

Row 1: Using Yarn B, 3ch (counts a treble here and throughout), 1tr in each st to end, turn.

Row 2: Using Yarn A, 3ch, skip one st, 3tr in next st, *skip 2 sts, 3tr in next st, rep from * to 2 sts from end, skip one st, 1tr in last st, turn.

Row 3: Using Yarn B, rep Row 1.

Row 4: Using Yarn C, rep Row 1.

Row 5: Usign Yarn D, rep Row 2.

Row 6: Using Yarn C, rep Row 1.

Row 7: Using Yarn D, rep Row 1.

Row 8: Using Yarn E, rep Row 2.

Row 9: Using Yarn F, rep Row 1.

Row 10: Using Yarn E, rep Row 1.

Row 11: Using Yarn F, rep Row 2.

Continue working in the pattern established, working two rows as Row 1 and one row and Row 2, in the colour pattern established, as follows, G, H, G, H, I, J, I, J, K, L, K, L, etc... until you reach your desired, length. I'm still working on mine so not sure when I'm going to stop just yet, but I think I'm going to be working in a total of around 90 mini skeins.
